Coimbatore Junction Railway Station, commonly known as Kovai Junction, is one of the major railway junctions of South India. It is located in the city of Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu. With multiple lines connecting Coimbatore to various cities in India, it is one of the busiest railway stations I’ve ever been to.

I cannot even remember how many passenger and commercial goods trains I saw passing through the station when I was there.

As per what I’ve heard from locals of the city, Coimbatore Junction Railway Station is an A1-graded station and holds great economic importance for the state of Tamil Nadu. Established by the British, the station has grown bigger and better over time. 

Let’s dig into some of the interesting pointers about history and the economic significance of Coimbatore railway station:

• It was established in the 19th century by the British colonial government for the transportation of both passengers and goods.

• The station supported the textile boom, which gave the city of Coimbatore a new name as the ‘Manchester of South India.’ 

• Gradually, it became an important commercial railway station with good state and national railway connectivity.

• The station has seen a lot of development, and today it is a bustling hub of 6 platforms and 15 railway tracks.

• In terms of revenue generation, Coimbatore railway station is third, followed by Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore.

• It has facilitated the transportation of people and goods for textiles, IT, education, and the health sector.

• The station accommodates over 1 crore passengers and generates over ₹ 300 crore revenue annually.

What I’ve noticed is that though there are various facilities at Coimbatore railway station for the convenience of passengers, their implementation is an issue.

Let me first take you through several facilities at the railway station:

• Retiring Rooms/Dormitories: Both AC and non-AC retiring rooms and dormitories are available at the station. Passengers can book these waiting rooms online and through counters at the railway station.

• Food Outlets: Food outlets, including local food stalls and canteens by IRCTC, are available for the convenience of passengers.

• Battery Cars: The service of electric battery cars is provided for senior citizens, the disabled, and children. 

• Wi-Fi: Coimbatore railway station junction also has Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the station.

• Cloak Rooms: By paying a minimal fee, passengers can store their luggage in the cloak rooms available at the station. 

• Book Stalls: Book stalls are also available at the station for passing the time. 

• Restrooms: Both male and female restrooms are available on almost all the platforms of the station.

• Drinking Water: The station also has the facility of drinking water at multiple points.

• Lifts/elevators: Lifts/elevators and ramps are available for easy movement of passengers.

• Parking Facilities: There are parking facilities for all vehicles, including two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The parking charges for 2-wheelers are different from those of four-wheelers. Additionally, the charges increase after your vehicle has been parked for four hours.

Despite all these facilities, I’ve observed various loopholes that, surprisingly, match exactly with a recent report from The Times of India. There are several issues regarding contaminated drinking water, restrooms, and inadequate parking facilities, among others. 

Shockingly, I’ve also observed passengers traveling without tickets due to no strict security at the checking points of the station.

Connectivity of Coimbatore Railway Station

The one thing that impressed me the most was the connectivity of the railway station. Coimbatore railway station is easily accessible by various means of transportation throughout the city.

Let me tell you some of the major points about the connectivity of this transportation hub:

• Air: The railway station is just 11 km away from the Coimbatore International Airport.

• Road: Due to its easily accessible location, taxi and auto rickshaw services are available from the railway station.

• Trains: About 150–200 trains, including Vande Bharat and other superfast trains, pass through the station daily, connecting it to major cities such as Delhi, Bangalore, and Mumbai.

• Metro: The government is planning a new metro that will connect to all the major stations, including the Coimbatore railway station.

Here comes my favorite part! 

I’ll take you through all the popular tourist places I went to, such as Adiyogi Shiva, Marudamalai Temple, Velliangiri Mountains, and Vaidehi Falls, among others. Plus, I’ll also tell you about their distance from the Coimbatore railway station.

1. Zone 2 Race Course Road – 2 km

Originally a horse racing track, now Zone 2 Race Course Road is a relaxing and well-maintained public area where people come for their morning and evening walks. I spent about two hours in this calm and peaceful atmosphere, having a picnic with my family. 

2. Gedee Car Museum – 2.8 km

Gedee car museum is an absolute paradise for car lovers. With a collection of over 100 vintage cars, the museum embarks upon the journey of the automobile industry. There is a separate section in the museum dedicated to Indian cars that are rarely seen on the roads.

3. Marudamalai Temple – 14 km

Marudamalai Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Lord Kartikey, the son of Lord Shiva. The temple stands high on a hill in the Western Ghats, where you can reach either by climbing around 800 stairs or by taking a bus. Though tiring, it was one of the most beautiful experiences of my life.

4. Vaidehi Falls – 27.7 km

Although the entry to the Vaidehi Falls is restricted due to wild animals in the forest, it is still a serene experience of natural beauty. The sounds of birds chirping and water flowing will make you forget about everything. You can also go for a drive or enjoy a short trek in this scenic view. 

5. Adiyogi Shiva – 29.6 km

Visiting Adiyogi Shiva was an absolute goosebump moment for me! The giant statue of Shiva stands at a height of about 112 feet, symbolizing 112 ways to attain Moksha. The peace and the divinity of this place will remind you to look in your soul and connect deeply with yourself. 

6. Dhyanalinga Temple – 31.3 km

Situated in the foothills of the Velliangiri mountains, the Dhyanalinga temple has a 14-foot-high, mercury-based linga. The temple is a perfect spot for meditation and self-introspection. Sitting there for just 15 minutes made me feel calm and focused. There is absolute peace, and nobody speaks or uses their phones inside the temple.

7. Velliangiri Mountains – 31.8 km

Known as the Kailash of the South, the trek to the Velliangiri mountains is really challenging and intense. But trust me, it’s all worth it once you reach the top. The shrine of Lord Shiva, the scenic view, and the wind take all your weariness away, and you can actually feel the presence of a divine energy.

If you are planning a luxurious stay, Vivanta Coimbatore is your hotel. I was there for about a day, and the experience was beyond my imagination. On my special request, they even gave me a cake with my name, Avantika Mohan, written on it. I took their spa treatment too, and it was literally therapeutic.
