How can the entire South India be this beautiful? That’s the question I’ve been asking myself since I returned from my getaway to some of the best places to visit in South India. 

Not just Indians, but I think visiting South India should be on the bucket list of literally everyone. I just can’t stop reminiscing, even after almost two months of returning from a complete tour of South India, covering every single place and city. 

As excited as I am to share my experience with you all, I’m pretty sure that shortly after reading it, you will plan your next escape to the best places to visit in South India. 

Why is South India a Popular Tourist Destination?

South India is literally the whole package, as you will find some of the best beaches, hill stations, authentic food, and the kindest people here. The peninsular region delights people of all ages and interests with its diverse landscapes and has a great historical significance, too. 

I’ve had some of the tastiest foods and met some of the nicest people here. Trust me, the taste of authentic dosa, idli, chicken fry, and uttapam is still in my mouth. 

And the best part was, even after facing the issue of a language barrier, people were keen to help us and repeated themselves multiple times to ensure we understood.

Out of all the seasons, you should definitely visit South India during summer, as the region comprises various hill stations, beaches, and cooler places. Ooty, Varkala, Kanyakumari, Wayanad, Tirupati, Munnar, Coorg, Rameshwaram, Goa, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are some of the best places to visit in South India. 

1. Ooty, Tamil Nadu

Ooty, Queen of the Nilgiris, is one of the most beautiful hill stations I’ve ever been to, and in my opinion, it is the best place to visit in April in South India, with temperatures ranging from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Also, don’t miss out the Ooty lake, Nilgiri mountain, Ooty rose gardens, and toy train ride at any cost.

Varkala came as an absolute surprise to me. I was at complete peace at the divine Janardhana Swamy temple here, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. This hidden gem of Kerala offers a range of activities to its visitors, including admiring its serenity, visiting various temples, enjoying water sports such as parasailing, and relaxing on the beach, among others.

There was greenery as far as my eyes could see, and I was fascinated by it. With paddy fields, spice plantations, and diverse wildlife, this is literally the green heaven of Kerala. I also had once in a lifetime experience of trekking to Chembra Peak, as the trek was moderately difficult but provided breathtaking views of the landscape.

Till today, I just can not get the view of numerous types of trees and crystal clear lakes outside my head. Other than being the perfect chilly place during summer, Kodaikanal is widely known for its lush green forests and is truly majestic.

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that recites the stories of the Vijaynagar Empire. If you are someone who loves and admires history and culture, Hampi is your place. I visited Virupaksha temple, one of the oldest Shiva temples here, and was fascinated by its Vijaynagara-style architecture.

The place is mainly popular among tourists due to its rich variety of flora and fauna.

The majority of the places in South India are literally a combination of everything, from spirituality to adventure. This list also includes Chikmagalur of Karnataka. My experience here was wholesome, from trekking to Mullyangiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, to spotting animals at Kudremukh National Park and seeking blessings of Lord Shiva at Hoysaleswara temple, I enjoyed every bit of the place.

Now I can finally understand why Kanchipuram sarees are famous worldwide, as I was literally shocked at the high-quality of silk used for these sarees, which are believed to be worn by Goddesses themselves. Also, Ekambareswarar Temple, a temple of Lord Shiva, has to be my favourite among all others I visited at Kanchipuram, the City of Thousand Temples.

Also, do you know, these falls are actually divided into four segments – Raja, Rani, Roarer, and Rocket, which is so majestic to watch from Linganamakki Dam.

The amount of Sacredness this place holds is beyond expression. Firstly, Srisailam is situated on the banks of the holy Krishna River, and secondly, it is home to Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, a Jyotirling, and Bhramaramba Devi Temple, a Shakti Peeth. I was truly lost in the divinity and sacredness of this place, and would strongly suggest it to everyone.

All the nature lovers gather here, as it is one of the most popular places to visit in South India, known for its landscapes and a diverse variety of fauna. I had so much fun in the Jeep Safari, spotting tigers, elephants, unknown category of birds. Himavad Gopalaswamy Betta temple, located on a hill, is another highlight from my visit here.

Undoubtedly, Yercaud is one of the most stunning hill stations I’ve ever been to, and the best part about it is, it is not as crowded as Ooty or Kodaikanal. I enjoyed boating in the peaceful vibe of Emerald Lake and strolling around the coffee plantations here.

The quiet vibe, peaceful environment, and beautiful tea estates literally served my eyes and soul. If you are also like me and love capturing the beauty of nature, you have to visit the viewpoints of Dolphin’s Nose and Lamb’s Rock.

Mark my words, don’t underestimate Lepakshi for just a small village, trust me, it is much more than that. My major highlights have to be the Giant Nandi, which is the largest in the world, and the Veerabhadra Temple, which features the unique hanging pillar.
