My Fort Kochi Diary: Beaches, Luxury Accommodations, and Hidden Gems

With the advent of the Hindu festival Makar Sankranti, I decided to head towards the Southern part of India, Fort Kochi to be specific, which is known as Asia’s first European colonial settlement. Originally a hidden fishing village, its fortunes changed around the 1300s with a massive flood creating a natural harbour, which is known for attracting Arab, Chinese, and European spice traders.

With this blog, I have decided to present my entire trip and share personal experiences with you, including places to stay, places to visit, and much more.

The iconic Chinese Fishing Nets (Cheenavala) are massive cantilevered bamboo and teak structures that have defined the skyline since the 14th century. It is also home to the Kerala Kathakali Centre, showcasing its tilt towards tradition, amalgamating it with modernity.

Different Ways to Reach Fort Kochiesa

The city is easily accessible from different cities via multiple transportation modes. From the main city of Ernakulam, it is possible to book a ferry ride, or you may also book a Fort Kochi boat jetty.

1. By Road

By road, the city can easily be reached through National Highway 66. 

It is approximately 223 km from Coimbatore, 312 km from Ooty, 565 km from Bangalore, and 694 km from Chennai. 

Kerala’s state transport offers Volvo, AC sleeper, and normal buses to and from major cities in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka.

2. By Train

To reach Fort Kochi via train, you arrive at Ernakulam Junction (ERS) or Ernakulam Town (ERN) railway stations. Take a ferry or a cab from the railway station.
