For the winter holidays this year, I visited Varkala Kerala, a unique coastal town famous for its incredible cliffs towering over the Arabian Sea, golden beaches, laid-back vibe, and spiritual significance, often referred to as “Dakshin Kashi”

With its pleasant, amiable weather, Varkala is most enchanting from October to February. This seaside town of Kerala also serves as a pilgrimage site, featuring its 2000-year-old Janardhanaswamy Temple.

Let me guide you through this charming city of Varkala, consisting of incredible landforms, long-stretched beaches, and a holy ground of rich heritage.

How to Reach Varkala?

To reach the ‘Pearl of the Arabian Sea’, there are 3 major defined ways. These three are as follows:

1. By Air

I chose to fly by air and boarded my flight from IGI Delhi. For flights to Varkala, fly into Trivandrum Airport (TRV). The journey to Varkala from the airport is roughly 40 km and takes about 1.5 hours, with options like public bus, taxi, or Uber available from the airport.

Air travel from major cities to Varkala costs around:

  • The cost from Delhi to Varkala is around INR 7000 (Delhi to Varkala distance 2,819 km).
  • The cost from Mumbai to Varkala is around INR 5000 (Mumbai to Varkala distance 1,514 km).
  • The cost from Bangalore to Varkala is around INR 3500 (Bangalore to Varkala distance 664 km).
  • The cost from Kochi to Varkala is around INR 3200 (Kochi to Varkala distance 181 km).

2. By Road

If you are planning to travel by road to Varkala, there are certain ways:

  • By Bus: Take an inter-city bus to nearby major towns like Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) or Kollam, then switch to local KSRTC (Kerala State Road Transport Corporation) or private buses.
  • By Cab or Taxi: Driving is simple due to well-maintained NH66 highways, and cabs are readily available from the airport or major cities for a comfortable trip. For instance Alleppey to Varkala distance, which is 125 km, can be easily covered by cab or taxi in about 2.5 hours

3. By Railways

  • Reaching Varkala from Delhi by train, the most convenient option is the Kerala Express (12626), which is the only direct daily service that stops at Varkala Sivagiri Railway Station.
  • To reach Varkala from Mumbai by train, the most reliable direct option is the daily Netravati Express (16345) to Varkala Sivagiri Railway Station.
  • To reach Varkala from Bengaluru by train, the most reliable daily option is the Kanyakumari Express (16526), which provides direct connectivity to Varkala Sivagiri Railway Station.

Upon arrival in Varkala, secure a spot at one of the top 5 stays.
